EXCESSIVE EXCLAMATION!
An interesting commentary in the New York Times the other day entitled, The Point of Exclamation with a link to a hilarious blog entitled Excessive Exclamation!!
A friend’s 12-year-old daughter once said that in her view, a single exclamation point is fine, as is three, but never two. My friend asked her where this rule came from and the girl said, “Nowhere. It’s just something you learn.”
Yes, the Internet has ruined our grammar forever. Who knew that adding a period at the end of a text message conveys sarcasm?
. . . a period just comes off as sarcastic (“Good job on the dishes.”)
