All the speeches are finished,
the families have gone home
to grieve for another year until
the cameras come again
to poke around for the second anniversary.

The gaping hole in the ground
is the hole in our hearts.

I see signs that say "Never Again"
but, what does it represent?

Does it mean that we will never again
act callously about the needs of others in our world?
never again see life and the environment as disposal
in order to ensure
we gas our cars to go to the Mall,
and make plastic throw-away toys?
never again walk out the door without saying "I love you?"
never again take it all for granted?
